I never have much luck with totem, it fails in a similar way with
various video formats.

I generally use VLC for useful playback (e.g. jukeboxing), or mpv for
quick playback of something I've double-clicked on.  They're better at
handling more file type varieties.

But since it says text/html, are you sure that your file isn't a
textual error message saved in the same filename as the media file that
you're expecting to play?
