Under X11, when Totem is trying to play the file it produces a
dialogue that says the required text/html decoder is not installed,
and provides a button to search for it in software, when then says it
can't find the decoder.
I never have much luck with totem, it fails in a similar way with
various video formats.

I generally use VLC for useful playback (e.g. jukeboxing), or mpv for
quick playback of something I've double-clicked on. They're better at
handling more file type varieties.

But since it says text/html, are you sure that your file isn't a
textual error message saved in the same filename as the media file that
you're expecting to play?
It is the file that was sent to me in an email from Microsoft Teams as the voice mail after the missed phonecall. Under VLC it plays but produces no audio, so I was just trying "Videos" to see if it did actually have audio in it that VLC couldn't play, which is when I got this issue. The person that made the phone call has told me there was actually no audio in the file, he didn't actually leave a message, he just put down his headphones and forgot to disconnect the phone call. But that not withstanding, I still shouldn't have got either of these errors, the decoder error nor the opengl error, but what is more significant is why does Totem behave differently under X11 to the way it behaves under Wayland?

Steve
