If you could speed test data through the drive's internal cache only (something it whizzed through, and didn't need to read or write to the internal storage medium), you might find you get close to idealistic claimed SATA speeds. The other thing to consider with drive thrashing, that I don't recall seeing being mentioned in this thread is a drive with errors.
