It has to be one of the following formats, from  man aplay.

 -t, --file-type TYPE
              File type (voc, wav, raw or au).  If this parameter is
 omitted the WAVE format is used.

These days, that pretty much means wav.  It might be possible to use
sox to translate another format on the fly and feed it to aplay, though
I haven't tried it.
