Hi!
Was looking for something safe and reliable, 8 or 16 ports,
managed. I
don't really need PoE. I've read really bad review on Netgear on
Amazon.
I am also looking for 'average' pricing, not the cheapest and not the
most expensive ones. Also don't want to have to register online
for some
"features" to work.
I use Ubiquiti in my home. For a router I use a Unifi Security Gateway
(USG)[1] but I'd like to upgrade to the Dream Machine Pro SE when
available. Then for the switch a non-PoE 24 port rack mount managed
switch with two UAP-AC Lites (Wifi 5, dual band)[2]. If I were to
setup a brand new system I would use the new WiFi 6 version[3].
Pretty happy with it overall. I run the Unifi controller software on a
CentOS Steam box in the closet since I package it for the RPM Fusion
non-free repository, however, when I upgrade the whole Dream Machine
series[4] have it built in.
Thanks,
Richard
Interesting answer. I have 1 Ubiquity AP (the UAP PRO IIRC) and didn't
find it great to set up with Linux. Had to install the mobile app to do
so. However now it seems to be working flawlessly ;-). At the same time
I have an ASUS RT-AC88U router which seems to have a stronger wifi
signal (I thought Unify AP were the best - signal is one thing, how many
connected clients it can handle is another). And it's really about "it
seems" as I didn't test anything at all.
I've heard and watched videos about those Ubiquity Dream machines
(almost recommended one to a friend) and particularly this one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY-24alrvCw which made me feel like it
was not for me (could be really more than ok for my friend though). The
downsides seem to be:
- Forced Registration
- No Official Wireguard Support
- No Outbound VPN Policy Routing
- No Controls on WAN failover
- No Multiple IP's on USG line
I mean Cisco has a 8 ports managed switch for $80 on Amazon. How good is
that? In comparison (I'm not trying to make fun of Amazon....) they
have a TP-Link "easy smart managed" at $30. In the specification they
write "wireless type: 802.11b, 802.11"...
So it is hard from my perspective to find the "right" product as
specifications and marketing always get in the way.
Thank you.
