if it was working a few weeks ago (for instance) and you use a kernel
that was in use a few weeks ago, and it still doesn't work, you can rule
out the kernel as the culprit. The kernel is what is interacting with
the hardware, so, while it could be a bug in the kernel, it could also
just be the kernel doing it's job, and reporting that there is something
wrong with the hardware.
