it looks like the trouble may start further up as noted above. You could always install another Desktop Environment and log in there to rule out LDM, XFCE, etc. Also, i either missed it in the first place, or forgot that you said you could plug it into another usb port and it worked fine. I wonder if you plugged a different device into the suspect port, if it would report any errors. Maybe that port is failing and/or it has been more heavily used than the rest? I see your follow up msg now and yes, you could try booting a previous kernel and see if that's what did it.
