Since the appearance of optical drives and media, I had always been
able to dd an iso file directly to the optical drive in the manner I described.

I've been using Unix and Linux for about that same time**, and I have _never_ been able
to use "dd" to write to CD or DVD recordable media except for the (now fairly
obsolete) DVD_RAM disks, which behave basically like a very slow hard drive. Maybe you
can/could with DVD+R disks. I have no experience with those.

chance you'd find yourself talking to Dennis Richie.
