My intuition for some reason makes me believe that a compatible phone (Nokia 6230 perhaps) would be the best option.. power isn't a problem and phones are made to have great reception and long term reliability. (something to be said for economies of scale there)

I do like the simplicity of a USB plug in modem, but I'm just hesitant to spend ~$200 for one of the ones proven to work when a $30 phone could work too.
