hi all,
I have been trying to compile my version of the UML kernel using the
2.6 version, but have run into these problems with different versions,
as explained below.

My host OS is Debian 3.1 running the kernel 2.6.8-2. I am able to run
the prebuild UML kernel 'linux', and the SKAS patch has already been
installed as shown below:
Package: kernel-patch-skas
Maintainer: Matt Zimmerman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Version: 3-9.3

I have enabled UBD, CONFIG_HOSTFS, and added static support for EXT2
in all the configs.

1) 2.6.14.3
I am getting a segmentation fault as soon as I run vmlinux. This post,
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.uml.user/8967

seems to explain the same problem, but there's no solution suggested.

2) 2.6.11
Here, the vmlinux panics when it is unable to boot the root filesystem.
---
VFS: Cannot open root device "ubd0" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
---

This post here discuss the same problem, but enabling the UBD,
CONFIG_HOSTFS, and adding static support for EXT2 did not help.

3) 2.6.12.1
I was able to build successfully, but when I run vmlinux, it just
spawns the process and exits without booting.

any help appreciated,

thanks in advance,
Nithin
