Hi, I have this bug on my machine (ATI Technologies Inc RV516 [Radeon X1300/X1550 Series]) as well. The attached python script (using mayavi2) reproducibly freezes X on a "standard" Kubuntu 9.04 (upgraded to from 8.04).
I installed the 2.6.29-02062904 kernel from PPA, which fixes the problem. I will try the 2.6.29.5 and .6 kernels to see if the bug reappears.
