Hi Patrick, To return to your original request about Java, Oracle have prevented it being easily available in distributions' own package managers because of a license change. There's a PPA that gives you easy access to the latest versions of Java 6, 7 and 8. If you go to https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/java it has instructions on how to install and use the PPA.
