It's not that people don't want to help - well, I didn't reply before because I actually *am* too busy this week (we've got an event coming up) - and I don't know this particular system so it's a lot of work to read all the documentation. So people are suggesting you visit the community specifically for Vanilla where they'll be able to help you more easily. Or you could change to a more 'mainstream' app like PhBB (which people are more likely to know already) - but this, in itself, would require you to be able to export your existing stuff blah blah, so not sure tha'll solve your problem right now.

If you need to learn the Linux commandline from scratch, I used the tutorials on tuxfiles: http://www.tuxfiles.org/ - it really does assume you know nuffin' and I found it a life-saver when I needed to learn Linux from a cold start. I think it's probably a good idea to get your head around it if you're going to use Linux/LAMP applications.
