Cheers, Al. Ah, right. For some reason I thought you were talking about reinstalling everything from scratch, from the Live CD. But if I have understood correctly, I can achieve my purposes without ever having to unmount sda1, which is the boot volume. I can demount, delete, recreate and remount all the other partitions without having any effect on sda1.
