Now, now! Yes, I did actually reinstall it. ;-) Anyway, I've now purged it again, and used 'remove orphaned packages' to get rid of a transcriber config file that seemed to have been left intact for some mysterious reason. And, having cleaned everything up, I've reinstalled Transcriber, and... Bingo! It plays at the right speed! Now there's just the very crackly sound to deal with. That has been reported as a bug, and in the launchpad discussion 'lunomad' reckons to have solved it by replacing the libsnack.so installed by the repository package with the version compiled from source.
