Thanks for the reply, Stephen.  I am experimenting with .ogg files, 
including the last UUK podcast.  The files play fine  in Totem;  but in 
Transcriber they seem to be playing back around 25% or more faster. 
Interestingly, this does not distort the pitch, only the speed, so that 
the band that plays us in to the podcast sounds normal, except that the 
musicians are clearly racing to get finished so they can get to the pub, 
and the people speaking seem to be in a speed-talking competition, but 
using their normal voices.  However, normal pitch not withstanding, the 
speed does make transcription harder (I can't type that fast!).

Anyway, now I know it's working for you, and there's no obvious setting 
that you have to adjust, I'll clearly need to dig about a bit more to 
woek out what's going on.
