i have taken into account everones response so far...and will experiment a
bit with the various ideas given here!
Unfortunately that is not possible at the mo as the other pc (xp) is being
used! (sorry off topic)

i have copied some files over (4gb to be precise). The transfer rate im
getting is 47.2 KB/sec at the mo.

like i said i will report back after trying the methods advised above!
