you certainly can: sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf (you might want to read up on nano first, I find the commands a bit counter-intuitive)
you might also try changing the driver type from "vesa" to "nv" I really would recommend burning a Gutsy Tribe 5 ISO though - you might find you boot up into a graphical environment with no problems at all...
