>From personal experience, X does seem to be giving me far fewer problems in Gutsy - it also gives you the option to install a proprietary nvidia driver 'automagically' on first boot. It also detects my widescreen display properly with no hacking of xorg.conf which is new.
You might find a Gutsy install gives you fewer problems - have you tried a LiveCD btw? Did you get a display when you booted that up?
