Well, Android (and also others I think) does it like that: when you have
a picture open, and swipe it to the left or to the right, it goes to the
previous/next picture.
I wouldn't say that is has to be like this just because others handle it
like that, but at least users are used to this behavior.

I keep saying, gestures from the edges in are pretty safe, but the
main part of the screen is for the app, not for navigation or other
tricks.
