An article about estimating Linux users: http://counter.li.org/estimates.php Maybe also ask shipit.ubuntu.com about how many CDs have been sent total since the project began How many Launchpad users are there ? 878137 as of today. Can we presume every one of them is a Ubuntu user ? Many may have registered just to get a CD... so there is a correlation with actual Ubuntu users. See: https://launchpad.net/people (top right corner) I was thinking we could put together a spec for actually counting Ubuntu users, by proposing Launchpad registration with asimple wizard-like app during the install process. The Ubuntu counter / Launchpad account could also be tied. Additionally, a "send my hardware profile" option. Hardware certification would benefit from these numbers, for example, to demonstrate usage of devices Y or Z. Just brainstorming :) But the answer doesn't seem easy unless we provide means to have those numbers accurately gathered and verified.
