I know the project, I'm Kubuntu User #12308 ;) But that's not the kind of stats we need. It's a very nice idea, but for what I'm thinking of it's just not apt. Look at Fedora, their projects "smolt" counts about 2 Million of users. I'm not saying we should copy smolt, but we should have numbers that give at least *some* evidence. > > Now, several people are asking for the sources of this number. > > Do we have any authentic statistics like > > * Number of downloads > > * Stats for the repositories > > * Shipit stats > > These are all good for 'trends' (eg. downloads are up) but I have > recently installed Ubuntu on 3 machines, but only downloaded 1 CD.. > what I think we can be confident of is that 'every download' will > generate at least 1 install. Of course these statistic would be imprecise, but at least they would give some idea about how many users we have. We should have a place where people could verify those numbers online (as alan said an ongoing note would be nice!) and know on what they are based. I also agree with Alan's idea for derived distros. But the question still remains: Where can we get those statistics?
