What I tend to do is add a changelog entry in the name of the
contributor, edit-patch the patch, pastebin the resulting debdiff and
link to documents which explain dch and edit-patch usage.

The benefits of this approach are: we get the patch in quickly, the
contributor gets information about how to do it (and some background
reading the docs) and has an example to compare their work with.

Personally I found this the best compromise and it usually does not take
very long.
