I agree! I'm using openbox, no desktop environment at all. You can easily write a script that users of certain distros can use to get a desktop similar to GNOME 2, or even better, e.g. based on openbox or jwm. However, you need to maintain a theme that makes GTK 2 as well as 3+ and other apps look pleasant. Maintaining this is a lot of work, I know what I'm talking about. I dislike stuff like the MATE Desktop Environment, but maybe you like it?
