I am having the similar issues
A little history.
This system was running Gutsy
I backed up /home on Gutsy by burning to DVD on this system
reformatted installed Hardy from cdrom with the DVD drive
currently in the system. After a fresh install of Hardy the problems
began.
What I am experiencing on 5 PCs 2 laptops is this.
Data CDs and music CDs work fine.
Data DVDs or movie DVDs or blank DVDs do not
work on this system since Hardy was installed.

i have attached a lshal.txt file burned on this system right before I
wiped Gutsy and installed Hardy. fresh install.
