I just installed fusion-icon (thanks for the pointer, Alex). I ran it
and added it to session startup apps, and now everything works
flawlessly. fusion-icon (along with DaveAbrahams' PM scripts, of course)
actually fixes all of the problems I'd been having.

pm-suspend.log is now free from errors, /etc/pm/sleep.d/00compiz no
longer throwing the exceptions I reported earlier. Since I'd made
several changes upon installing/running fusion-icon (like switching to
emerald window decorator and clearing out some cruft from my session), I
wanted to verify that running fusion-icon was really the fix (if you can
consider a system as brittle as this to be fixed!) So I reverted
everything to the way it was (as best I could), and the problem
returned. I did nothing but run fusion-icon, and everything was OK
again.

It hurts my head to think about what this implies about the root of the
problem, especially in conjunction with others' reports that fusion-icon
actually broke things for them. I'm just happy to have it working (for
now). Let me know if there are any other diagnostics or info from my
system that would be useful.
