I got it working now. I had to download the Japanese language support post install through synaptic. Maybe there was a problem with the download during my install (I dont think the japanese text files are on the CD are they?)
Anyway, everything's ok now, but one of the things I loved about Gutsy was how Japanese language input just worked out of the box, so I was disappointed that it didn't with Hardy.
