comment #64 it appears I gave bad advice with "USR1". We need a signal
whose default action is to dump core, so please try this instead next
time the problem happens:

Switch to a VT and the force gnome-shell to dump core:

  killall -ABRT gnome-shell

Then hopefully we will get a crash report created in /var/crash/
