Sorry.  Indeed it seems that adding multiple spacers using obconf of
width 1000 or less has the same effect, so that is clearly the
preferable workaround.  My previous post becomes a derivative
experiment.

I.e. Uncheck all "Stretch" boxes, and place one or more "Spacer" applets
at an appropriate place, setting their width to an appropriately large
value (which value is restricted to 1000 or less by obconf).  This
apparent behaviour of "Spacer" would seem to almost make "Stretch"
unnecessary?

Apologies in advance if this does not seem to work so well for others.
