I dunno how useful this knowledge is but I learned a few more things.

1. Doing a power cycle of the whole system does not help to fix the USB 
Ethernet.
2. Booting an older OS is not enough to fix the USB Ethernet, it must also be 
power cycled (by unplugging and re-inserting, or by power cycling the whole 
system).
