Well, hypothesis seems a bit wrong.
I retried but this time, unmounting /media/disk before.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo umount /media/disk
umount: /media/disk: device is busy
umount: /media/disk: device is busy
[I had indeed had nautilus browser on the disk open, closed it]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo umount /media/disk
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo fdisk /dev/sdb

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3936.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

[Automatically, after that, system remounted the USB key, and showed me
disk-File Browser with my files still there, but ... oh well, I am including a
screenshot]
