I spoke too soon, just occurred again, this is on a Thinkpad R61 7738-A16, under hardy heron. Different in that it doesn't corrupt the screen, it just switches between video modes, and that it took much longer to occur. Virtual terminals do not work, and the only "safe" way to escape is ctrl-alt-del.
