Can you try the following - it should help figure out what's going wrong: - Open a terminal window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal). - Type "sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude full upgrade" (without the quotes). - Enter your password when prompted. - Copy and paste the output into this bug report.
As far as the difference between Ubuntu and Launchpad, Ubuntu is the name of the operating system on your computer, and Launchpad is the name of this website, which is used to help develop and manage Ubuntu (as well as other software projects).
