Unfortunately there's little details about the error. Could you please post a picture of your compute screen once the 5.4 kernel fails to boot? (after you removed the 'quiet' and 'splash' options in the grub editor, and pressed ctrl-x to boot.) Mainly looking for error messages, a initramfs prompt, or something like a stack trace.
