Given snap's many poor design choices, I was delighted to find that

$ sudo apt autoremove --purge snapd

had no disadvantages for me, and I recommend it highly to anyone who is
able to avoid snap in their ecosystem. In addition to solving this home
directory issue, it eliminates some of snap's other intentional clutter,
such as bloating `df` and `cat /proc/partitions` with garbage.

Regarding unnecessary comments, I'm glad to see people standing up for
themselves. Since the devteam's choices don't respect us, I think we
have every right to return the favor. It seems to me that after 4 years,
continuing to annoy them is one of the few options available to those
who can't avoid snap altogether.
