I tried two distros: Fedora and openSUSE. I have a TOSHIBA MK8037GSX hard disk. In Fedora by default, there is something around 6 Load/Unload cycles per hour. In openSUSE, after a hour of an uptime there was only 1 Load/Unload!!! So, this looks like very ubuntu specific and should be worked out as soon as possible.
