I've tested this on a freshly reinstalled Intel 945 based laptop, but am unable to reproduce the behavior (but I've had Gutsy running on it since tribe 1, and never saw the original behavior).
It sounds like there may actually be several separate bugs that can lead to this same behavior more or less. Unfortunately that will make it pretty tough to determine for certain when it's fixed. Juan Pablo specified exact steps for reproducing the situation that then results in the blinking gray boxes he showed in comment 11. If you have a behavior that seems similar but cannot be reproduced with those steps, or does not display screen corruption and lockup, then assume you have an unrelated bug and enter a new report. We can always dupe them together later. I notice this bug upstream, with a similar error trace as Brian: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=437207 Interestingly, while the reporter was running a debian system, they were using a Ubuntu kernel. Hmm... I also found this report which also has a similar error trace: http://readlist.com/lists/lists.freedesktop.org/xorg/2/11900.html For this one, it sounds like the issue turned out to be a DRM issue. In any case, on the off chance that there's already a fix for this issue, I packaged up the current git head of the intel driver: http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/.
