I have an i915 and really don't know what to say about blacklisting. If
I use the i810 driver, the only problem I have is that I can't go
1400x1050, however I have 1280x1024 and it's already enough on my 12''
display. On the other hand, both compiz and xv work well. On feisty,
everything worked fine out-of-the-box, while on gutsy I had to manually
set resolution to 96dpi, it was 75dpi and everything was too small to be
usable. This is a regression of the i810 driver. In any case I believe
that both disabling 3d effects and disabling Xv is unacceptable on a
graphics card that can do both. Also see Bug #137225, can some of you
try if you have the same segfault?
