If you renamed it (removing the .old extension but leaving it in the same 
direcotry) and then started X the new X would have overwritten the log. Any 
chance you could *back up* your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change nv to nvidia (I 
am of course assuming you know how to use the recovery mode and console editors 
to undo the change/*copy* your working config back. If not please don't do this 
test).
