As I said before, I renamed it *when* I copied it to my home folder.

The problem with nv versus nvidia was the opposite: either restoring a
backup of xorg.conf that includes nv instead of nvidia, or just by
changing that word (nvidia) in the xorg.conf file, solves the problem
with the x-server.  Which, I guess, means that the problem is in the
kernel module.

I just reinstalled Feisty, so... Thanks for the help anyway.
