@fig do you have the latest gnome-shell via ppa? Maybe only if you use
the newest gnome-shell and the modal setting it fixes the bug. :)

Did you check if the modal setting got updated? Just open gedit, type something 
and close it. The dialog that pops up has to be moveable without moving gedit 
else it didn't work. I'm just asking as copy/pasting the line might not have 
worked. Sorry if you already tested that.

About the total crash. Maybe this here helps:

"As a workaround when the shell wont restart after a crash, and leaves
your windows dead and unfocussed, go to Terminal and File->New profile
create a profile called "Restart shell" and create. In the properties
choose "Run a custom command instead of my shell" and enter the command
"gnome-shell --replace". Now if the shell crashes and you cant get the
text focus to a terminal to type this manually, you can right-click on
the Desktop and "Open in terminal"; then from the Terminal File menu,
select File->Open Tab->Restart Shell."

Of course you have to do "create" this before the creash as after you
can't type. :)
