Year ago I had experienced similar bug on Ubuntu. Also occasional shell crashes without clear reason. Those crashes happened more frequently than now. From those times I have changed video card and several times changed distros. But I remember that those crashes were somehow linked to power management in video system. I was able to struggle them by setting PowerMizer settings to Maximum Performance in Nvidia X Server settings. I will try to do the same now. But now it will take more time for me to approve is it linked to power management or not. I see current bug quite seldom. So If you have Nvidia card, please, try running your system for a while with PowerMizer Performance Level changed from deafault "Adaptive" to "Prefer Maximum Performance". Should bug happens again, please, report here about this. Then it will be clear that this bug not linked to power management in video system.
