I think we need to clearly separate the 2 (at least) different issues mentioned above :
1. The crash : when gnome-shell completely crashes, making window borders disappear and all iteractions with the desktop impossible; in this case, sometimes gnome-shell automatically reloads, sometimes it does not => This is the issue this report was originally about 2. The freeze : when interactions with the desktop become impossible, but the look of the desktop remains the same; in this case gnome-shell never reloads (and some interactions are sometimes possible, like Alt+F2) => This looks to me more like bug #892316 In order to help identifying where the problem comes from, please try to post your comments on the bug report which seems to be the closest one to your issue.
