As far as I know, Ubuntu is installed with IPTables installed by default. I know this because after a clean install I can check iptables and I get a list of rules applied. So by default there does seem to be a firewall installed. Firestarter that gets installed is merely the GUI part. In any case, no matter where the problem lies, I think VPN should just work. I hope sómeone can help.
