I removed .cache/gwibber and .config/gwibber as you suggested. Now Gwibber won't start at all. I purged gwibber and gwibber-themes. Removed all references I could find to gwibber in my home directory (this included .config/gwibber, .cache/gwibber, and everything related to gwibber in .gconf/.
I then re-installed gwibber and gwibber-themes. It still won't start.
