We must be miscommunicating. The precise words you used above,

"echo autospawn = no >> ~/.pulse/client.conf

undoing the commands"

imply that PulseAudio is in fact running. Did you in fact leave the
"autospawn = no" bit in ~/.pulse/client.conf?
