Ok, so even with PulseAudio *enabled*, you have good sound. Please
note: undoing the commands (i.e., removing autospawn = no) actually
reactivates PulseAudio.

Unfortunately, no, it doesn't prove PulseAudio is the problem. It does
appear suspiciously to be a race condition in the session startup,
which unfortunately points to something else in the software stack.

I'll take a look at the screens and logs after I leave work.
