This dependency conflict emanated from that python2.6 is the current version installed for Lucid. The package python-gtksourceview2 referred to the wrong version of the virtual package, i.e python2.5-gtk2. Today, checking again, python-gtksourceview2 now correctly refers to python2.6-gtk2 so tried to install ubuntu-desktop again and succeded. Seems that this bug now has been solved.
