Addendum: After a few more updates for Lucid Lynx, I installed a few more apps using
Add/Remove Applications program, including gedit. Every app installed without trouble. Then I tried to install ubuntu-desktop, with Transmission BitTorrent Client uninstalled. ubuntu-desktop and Transmission BitTorrent Client installed just fine. Problem solved! No more dependency problems!
