I also ran into this issue today. I ran tomboy in debug mode per joshua's instructions and found the following error in the log:
[ERROR]: Synchronization failed with the following exception: a name did not start with a legal character 32 ( ) Line 4, position 72. Earlier today I had created a note in Ubuntu One with 2 web addresses in it. After I deleted the note, synchronization worked again. Line 4, position 72 would have been the end of the second address (see below). http://lifehacker.com/235207/geek-to-live--back-up-gmail-with-fetchmail I don't think "l" would cause an issue. Perhaps I did or didn't end with a blank line and that is causing the issue.
